Director, Strategic Communications and Public Relations

The Director of Strategic Communications and Public Relations oversees the development, implementation, and coordination of a range of public relations and communications strategies for a diverse mix of clients across the Reputation Management Group portfolio. S/he must have excellent client relationship management capabilities as well as exceptionally honed skills across the practice discipline including writing, media management, channel fluency including digital applications and crisis and issues management. The Director must be able to lead PR colleagues in client engagement strategies and ensure that all client assignments are high quality, on-time and in keeping with client expectations in service of goals and objectives. Additionally, the Director will participate in the attraction, hiring, development and retention of the Reputation Management practice team members.

As a leader of the Reputation Management team, the Director will report to the practice SVP and collaborate across Karma / Material to ensure that client relationships are expanded and developed. Additionally, the Director will play a critical role in business development. S/he will be responsible for identifying new practice protocols and tools to help ensure the ongoing advancement of the Reputation Management practice including the adoption of new and evolving opportunities that lean on technology and require keen strategic deployment insights.


Responsibilities

Client Engagement and Accountabilities

  • Serve as a primary or senior contact for clients

  • Create research-driven, creative communications strategies and programs that meet or exceed client objectives

  • Use capabilities and resources across Karma / Material to meet client goals and budgets

  • Take immediate action upon client feedback and help solve client problems

  • Display understanding of Karma consulting processes including public engagement, messaging workshops, master narrative assignments, stakeholder mapping exercises and crisis management; lead aspects of these assignments

  • Demonstrate advanced writing skills (ideally including ghostwriting for senior executives) and executive positioning expertise (conferences, earned media, social media, etc.)

  • Oversee the development of newsworthy pitches, recommend appropriate media strategies, and build relationships with journalists and social media influencers to achieve clients’ business goals

  • Demonstrate practical and advanced understanding of visual communications, social media and the digital landscape and how to incorporate these channels into client programs

  • Seek out, coordinate and facilitate cross-practice work to provide clients and prospects with the most compelling work and cultivate business growth opportunities

 

Company Business and Financial Performance

  • Lead and/or contribute to new business proposals and the identification of new client opportunities

  • Understand core financial constructs including revenue, profitability, pricing structures (hourly vs. retainer accounts), utilization, realization, budgeting and forecasting

  • Steward resources respectfully and thoughtfully

  • Participate in opportunities to promote and advance the reputation of the company and build familiarity with prospective targets

 

Team and Talent Development

  • Proactively plan and support team prioritization and assignments to ensure reasonable workloads, optimized profitability, accommodation of skills and experience to projects and budget changes, and to avoid over-servicing

  • Develop and oversee account teams’ performance, ensuring quality work is done, efficient processes are in place, and client requests are handled in a timely fashion

  • Ensure performance expectations, career development plans and goals are set and reviewed annually during the formal performance review process for all direct reports

  • Provide ongoing, constructive feedback to junior colleagues and consistently hold them accountable addressing underperformance in a timely manner

  • Mentor, coach and support colleagues as appropriate

  • Help attract new talent and work to build a team with diverse views and background

  • Lead by example; demonstrate strong work ethic, creative abilities and industry expertise

 

Qualifications

The Director of Strategic Communications and Public Relations must have 10 years of strong PR experience with an agency or consultancy enterprise in a supervisory role and has a demonstrated understanding of the rules of engagement for excellence in a client-centric professional services model. S/he must have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, have proven problem solving and analytical skills, strong presentation skills and the confidence to lead and counsel clients through strategic initiatives and new approaches. S/he must demonstrate behaviors consistent with Karma’s / Material’s values and uphold the standards of the international code of ethics for public relations professionals. S/he must be a citizen of the world, curious and a constant learner, a daily consumer of news and media and engaged in community.
