Last month Philadelphia hosted the 12th Annual Pennsylvania Conference for Women. The Convention Center opened its doors to approximately 8,000 women for a one-day professional and personal development event on what matters most to women. Two attributes were undeniable: inspiration and optimism. Femininity was just table stakes.

Several weeks ago, a few of us here at Karma attended CreativeMornings, a breakfast lecture series, to hear Dom Streater speak. Dom, a fashion and textile designer, won season 12 of Project Runway—easily the TV show of choice at Karma. Where other agencies do cutthroat March Madness brackets, we carefully pick our top three designers. We watch the show weekly, analyzing every fabric choice and savoring every meltdown.

There are advantages to being small, and I’m not just talking about my 5’2” stature still helping me pass as a college student. In advertising, more times than not, the big players make the big news, but at Karma I see the small things creating the biggest impact in our collaborations with global brands like Nike.

I came into this business in the early 90’s when Philadelphia was on the edge of total disaster. Our city, like most other rust-belt centers, had a lot of problems and not a single one was an easy solve. No matter, I remember feeling optimistic about our future. After all, I was once the little girl whose favorite Golden Book was “I Like to Live in the City.” But I wasn’t just naïve in my enthusiasm for Philadelphia’s potential. The city was slowly evolving into something new and different and better.

Recently I found myself debating the merits of activity tracking wristbands with a friend. We were both considering buying one as a way to improve our overall health. Tracking activity data seems to be a useful tool and motivator for better choices—can you do a bit more today? Can you do more today than you did yesterday?

We have a rather competitive, structured and fruitful internship program here at Karma. Seems like there is a always a steady stream of interviews where a sea of promising and hopeful future professionals are looking to enter agency life and experience all the communications industry has to offer—in just three months.
